Dr. Dave Nystrom is a physician leader with nearly 20 years of experience in medical directorship and rural healthcare. His work helps organizations create medical and nursing systems that are rigorous enough for high-acuity care and practical enough for daily operations.
He has served as Medical Director for multiple behavioral-health centers, including Ivory Plains and St. Gregory Recovery Center. In those roles, he worked closely with Amy Everett to strengthen medical safety in detoxification and residential treatment settings.
Dr. Nystrom’s leadership extends beyond behavioral health. He has served as Medical Director for Carroll County EMS and for multiple long-term-care facilities, giving him broad experience across emergency response, chronic care, community medicine, and interdisciplinary clinical teams.
He is board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and was named the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians Family Physician of the Year in 2019. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathy from Des Moines University and has served as adjunct clinical faculty for both the University of Iowa and Des Moines University.
Outside the work
Dr. Nystrom lives on an acreage in rural Iowa. He enjoys the outdoors, smoking meats, national parks, travel, golf, swimming, poker, sci-fi audiobooks, time with his three college-age children, and his goldendoodles, Toby and TJ.
